The threads on this part are tapered pipe threads. They should seal just fine without any added sealant. However many people will use a small amount of pipe thread compound or Teflon tape. These products not only help seal, they provide some lubrication to help you get one more half turn you may want to line up the outlet Please follow manufacturer's installation directions.
